The aim of the United Way Prosperity Dashboard is to present compelling data to inform a path forward toward a resilient, prosperous, and more equitable region. We want partners, businesses, and individuals to use the dashboard to join us in developing strategies and partnerships for a stronger Southeast Louisiana.

18 percent of Southeast Louisiana lives in poverty. The Federal Poverty Level (FPL), with its minimal and uniform national estimate of the cost of living, far underestimates the number of households that cannot afford to live and work in the modern economy. ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) identifies the struggle of an additional 35 percent of Southeast Louisiana households, comprised of people in the workforce who earn more than the FPL benchmark but still live paycheck to paycheck – unable to save, and often one health emergency, one car repair, or one harsh storm away from poverty. Read more about ALICE and how United Way is working to improve outcomes and incomes for households living under the ALICE Threshold at https://www.unitedwaysela.org/alice.

The strength of Louisiana’s economy is inextricably tied to the financial stability of its residents. If households earned enough to meet their basic needs, not only would family hardship be eased, but Louisiana’s economy would benefit substantially. This is true in times of economic growth, and it becomes even more important during a period of crisis and recovery.

Together, we can educate, empower and support people to meet their basic needs. We can create a stronger, more vibrant Southeast Louisiana.
